TOWN RIVER BRIDGE
IMPROVEMENTS DEFERRED DETERMINATION OF HIGHWAY FIRST The threat to the Whakatane Bridge approach and the unstable state of the bridge itself were discussed at the meeting of the Whakatane County Council yesterday, when a letter was received from the Minister of Works stating that it was not intended that any action be taken until the course of the State Highway was determined. • The letter advised that the Minister had discussed the matter of the Whakatane River Bridge with the Chairman of the Main Highways Board who advised that it would be. unwise to make any decision for a site for a new structure until more was known as to what method was to be adopted in controlling the river adjacent to the Borough. Attention had also been drawn to the following resolution unanimously approved by the No. 3 District Highways Council at its meeting held on June 18, 1946:
“That the proposed improve ments to the existing highway system adjacent to Whakatane be deferred until such time as more improvements have been carried out to the existing State Highway system, more especially to the proposed State Highway route from Rotorua to Opotiki, via Te Teko, Awakeri, Taneatua, Waimana to Opotiki.”
The Council decided in view of the fact that the chairman of the Whakatane Harbour Board raised this matter at Whakatane when the Minister of Works last visited here, that a copy of the Hon. Minister’s Tetter be forwarded to the Board.
