WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
MEETING AT TANEATUA The Taneatua Women’s Institute'-; held its monthly meeting in the hall ' supper room on September 9. Mrs Grey presided. Members sang the Ode to Friendship after which the Aspirations were read. The president extended a welcome to Mrs Armstrong, Federation President and to Mrs Peck V of Otakiri W.1.,' who had been asked to judge entries in the Flower. Show and also to demonstrate floral, work.
After the correspondence and business had been dealt with members were reminded that the October meeting would be held on 7thinstead of the 14th as scheduled.
At this stage as is customary on Flower Show day the chair , was handed over to Mrs Butler, president of the gardening circle. The Roll Call “My Favourite Flower and Why,” was popular, various reasons being given for preference of certain blooms. Members and visitors then viewed the blooms which were entered in the Flower Show.
Afternoon tea followed after which Mrs Peck skilfully demonstrated the making of a bouquet. The afternoon was closed with the singing of the National Anthem. , Competitions resulted as follows:
Three sausage rolls: Mrs Grey. Buttonhole: Mrs Kr Tebbutt 1, Mrs Grey 2. Best vegetable: Mrs K. Tebbutt. Best flower: Mrs Grey 1, Mrs Cradwick 2. MEETING AT THORNTON The Thornton branch of the Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting on September 11. There was a good attendance and after the Ode to Friendship had been sung, Mrs Robb read the Aspirations. Business and correspondence was dealt with and remits for the biannual conference next month were read and discussed.
The Roll Call, “An early photograph of yourself” was interesting. It w as decided to make a special effort for the monthly parcel to the Institute link in Scotland and every member was asked to bring to the next meeting an article of food suitable to pack. The box of chocolates donated by Mrs Carson was reraffled. Since last meeting and the parcels fund benefits by a further £3 from this effort. The chocolates were won by Mrs Findlay of Taneatua. Afternoon tea was served and the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close. Competitions for the day were:— Best flower: Mrs Ducker 1, Mrs Watts 2. Best vegetable: Mrs Sheat 1, Mrs Gardner 2. ,
Three Iceland poppies: Mrs Gardner 1, Mrs Watts 3.' Steam pudding: Mrs J. Branch 1, Mrs Gardner 3.
