MAY BE RAISED

AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION RATES The rate of subscription to the Automobile Asociation (Wellington), fixed 41 years ago, may have to be raised. It was stated that overhead had increased to £1 per member, but that the North Island Union did not feel that there should be an increased subscription.

The chairman, Mr E. A. Batt, said that while they had reserves, it would not be good business to use them up.

“We are now paying more than double for our cars and maintenance,” he said. “Salaries have risen very considerably, both for inside and for outside staffs, and many of our employees are being paid over the award rates. We cannot go on indefinitely without increased subscription rates. At the same time, it is hopeless for one association to increase the subscription rates while others make no movement.” It was stated that there would be a small credit balance this year. The subscription will probably be considered at the annual meeting.
