ROWING
CAPTAIN’S REPORT 1 > r - \W SUCCESSFUL YEAR EXPERIENCED Following is the report of the Club Captain, Mr B. Norman, which was presented at the annual general meeting of the Whakatane Rowing Club held last Wednesday. The season just past has been a most successful one both socially and from a rowing point of view. The strength of the club was just over 30 members and most of these members were very keen but as is usual there were a few who dropped out as the season advanced. Financially we had some fairly large expenses to meet during the season but in spite of it all we managed to finish up with a slightly increased credit balance due mainly to a lot of hard work put in by your committee and a number of the mem bers in raising money by various means. Rowing The club was in attendance at four regattas during the season and met with success at each. At Hamilton we entered three crews. At Mercer two, at Ngaruawahia one and at Tauranga five. The club was successful in winning back this season from Tauranga the Bay of Plenty rowing trophy (The King’s Picture Cup). Trial fours were-field at fortnightly intervals, nine in all. These drew good fields and were very evenly contested. The club attended the Tauranga Club’s opening day and some very good racing was seen and taken part in. At the Tauranga regatta a challenge race in eights was held between a crew from the Tauranga Club and our Club. This was in the form of a fancy dress affair and proved a great success. Social A number of dances were held during the season and as usual these proved very popular. Waimana also very kindly ran an evening for the club finances and those members who 'journeyed up there had a most enjoyable evening. The club’s picnic last season was in the form of a launch trip up the river to a spot where we had lunch then back down to the sandhills where games were played. Unfortunately the weather was not very good, but still those who attended had a good time. The club’s presentation of trophies took the form of a social evening in the King Street Hall and this was well attended and voted a real good evening. Committee meetings were held fortnightly during the rowing season and whenever necessary during the winter months. The attendance at these was good. Thanks The committee’s thanks go to Mr Wiggins for the use of his truck in transporting boats to regattas. To all those young ladies who helped at our functions; to all those people who helped us financially; to the Press for their great help in boasting rowing along; to all those gentlemen who presented trophies etc.; to the Armstrong family for running a social evening. Congratulations Our congratulations to the maiden four L. Carey, E. Hunt, G. Moore, G. Dines and T. Windley for their very excellent performances in-all their races; to the winners of the points trophies; to those of our members who have joined the ranks of married men during the season.
I wish to take this opportunity of offering my thanks to the committee and members for their grand co-operation in all matters during the past season.
