WHAKATANE ASSOCIATION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The annual general meeting of the Whakatane Cricket Association was held on Monday, September 15, at 7.30 p.m. in the Whakatane County Council Chambers. There were delegates from Whakatane United, Paroa, P. and T., Waimana and Taneatua Cricket Clubs. Unfortunately the Central Club did not send any delegates and voting by delegates on certain matters could not be held in their absence.
Mr N. E. Rigden was in the chair.
Minutes of the eleventh annual general meeting were read and confirmed.
In his report the president, Mr N. E. Rigden, stated that last season had been very successful and that the prospects for the approaching season were just as good, if not better. As far as representative games were concerned Whakatane did quite well, but was unfortunate to lose the Attrill Cup to Tauranga. The Williams Cup which was held by United was also lost to a Tauranga team,' and this team successfully held off an attack by the Taneatua Club.
Mr Rigden also mentioned the loss to cricket in the district of Mr A. G. Fisher and Mr A. Whitty who have left the district.
In the Bay of Plenty team which went to Gisborne four Whakatane representatives gained a place, and under the conditions, which were not good for cricket, they did very well. Election Of Officers The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron: Mr R. S. Cleland. President: Mr N. E. Rigden. Vice-presidents: Messrs. J. H. Gillam, S. S. Shapley, li. G. Warren, C. L. Hudson, J. D. Rivett, W. Tysson, G. Lodge, C. Kingsley-Smith, G. Oswald, E. S. Grant, W. G. Howat and L. R. Spring. Hon. Secretary-Treasurer: Mr J. D. Carling.
Hon. Auditor: Mr H. G. Warren.
Management .Committee: A proposal that each club appoint delegates to the committee was carried. Sole Selector: Two proposals were received, being those of Mr W. J. McKenzie and Mr L. R. Spring. The question as to whether either would be available was raised, and it was decided to leave the matter over to the management committee at its first meeting. Social Committee: It was decided that a committee be set up out of the Management Committee and that each club send in the names of two ladies who are willing to help in that capacity. Bay of Plenty Association: Mr N. E. Rigden was appointed delegate.
Considerable discussion took place on the matter of Saturday or Sunday play. After a vote had been taken by. all present which resulted in favour of Saturday play by a majority of one vote, it was decided to leave the matter to the Management Committee. It is hoped that all club delegates will attend this meeting so that the matter can be finally settled.
