HOCKEY DANCE
GAY EDGECUMBE FUNCTION WIND-UP SOCIAL The members and supporters of the Edgecumbe Hockey Club spent a very enjoyable evening at a windup social and dance held at the Edgecumbe Hall last Monday. An attendance of just over eighty saw that the evening went with a swing. Music for the first waltz was nicely played by N. Huish. The .first game of the evening the honeymoon couple caused great amusement and clothes were hastily donned or discarded in record time. Two teams reached the finals in the applace race but after a lot of necking, and strutting about the game had to be declared a draw. An envelope dance played by A. Teasdale, kept the dancers busy and envelopes were dropped like hot cakes. The unlucky ones werey T. Dodunski, T. Ellis, K. Civil and M. Williams while A. Blair receiving a late pass from B. Hill collected the prize. The match box competition again found the players nose to nose and no one ‘nose’ now who won. The Monte Carlo was next on the programme played by Mrs Weir and won by E. Boulcott and M. Jensen While a parcel was going round in which G. Stodart was finally presented with a packet of ‘Epsoms’ for being the slowest runner on the field. Supper for the evening was prepared under the capable control of Ben Hill, Ken Magee, Joe Weir and Heck the copper boy.
After supper the secretary thanked all members and supporters for the splendid support and assistance they had given during the season. Representatives were present of all organisations that had assisted the club and their help had been greatly appreciated by the committee. There were sixty-seven members, twenty-five girls and forty-two men and together with the many supporters the club., enjoyed a very successful season.
Farewells were offered to F. Wigg and T. Eagleson who are leaving the district and both men replied briefly. The president, Mr A. Crook, then thanked the secretary for the work he had performed for the club during the season. ' The next dance was the broom dance and when the music stopped girls were eagerly snapped up. Joe Weir seemed to have his fair share of the broom and proceeded'to sweep everyone off their feet. Musical Arms then followed and was won by Jean Graham and I. Murphy. The Hoki Toki and La Conga were then put on for the younger members who really let themselves go. The Statue Waltz saw some keen competition and regardless of all attempts to distract Owen Huish and Betty Newdick came through with a steady stance and a vacant stare. A vocal item was given by Helen and Nancy Ferguson and was appreciated by all present. At twelve the Cinderella Waltz with the lights going out at an opportune time, caused many a Prince Charming to go astray, after which ‘Poor Pussy’ found the older members issuing some very pityful and entreating cat calls.
The last- waltz was followed by Auld Lang Syne after which G. Stoddart called for three cheers for Ken Civil who in return thanked Jimmy Simmins for his excellent entertainment at the piano and a very enjoyable evening was brought to a close with hearty cheers for the Edgecumbe Hockey Club and the playing of the National Anthem.
