Competition Winners The following were winners of the various competitions conducted in connection with the Girl Guides Stall Friday: Doll (230) Billie Anne Maui; bed (207) Mrs J. Patterson; frock (138) Lynne Woods; dinner (33) Mrs Buddie.

Maori Rep’s 111-luck The retirement of Ranapia with a split knee cap from the Rugby field last Saturday wrecked that player’s chances of participating in the tour of the recently announced Maori All Black team. Ranapia was among the three men selected from the Bay of Plenty for this singular honour. Fire ! That there is magic in the sound of a fire siren was demonstrated last night. ■ The people came by cycle, motor cycle, car, truck and on foot. Men in pyjamas and dressing gowns ladies .in curling pins, (and dressing gowns). In fact it seems feasible that if some young man wants to see what, the girl friend looks like without her “war paint” he should arrange a fire in her neighbourhood and stick around! Venturesome Duckling Advantage was taken of the absence of the usual crowd on the Strand last Saturday morning by a wild, duck and her family of five ducklings which could not have been .more than a few weeks old. The unusual visitors progressed towards the Strand via the watertable in front of the County Chambers and their appearance caused considerable excitement, especially when the mother suddenly took wing in the face of intensified human interest and left her young brood to. find cover. The clan dispersed in all directions with the exception of one who was duly captured and taken hoine in triumph to a broody hen.
