RACING NEWS & VIEWS

A Restoration The Wanganui Jockey Club’s Centennial Year is to be marked by a restoration of the Jackson Stakes at the Cup meeting. In past years this event has been won by entrants that have later proved to be amopg New Zealand’s best performers. Page’s Raid The steeplechaser, Page’s Raid, has won recently in stakes £2240. In both the Great Northern and Grand National Steeplechases he experienced bad luck in the running, or his winning total would have been materially increased. Perceptibly Improved The Takanini trained Balgowan, a Herries Memorial Cup winner, is executing good galloping work on the tracks. He is a class horse, and should again be an acquisition in the best of open handicap fields. A Quality Filly * Included in trainer J. H. Wallace’s team at Takanini is the Finis —Stretto filly that is confidently expected to race worthy of her breeding. She is of a very even temperament and a very capable worker. Re-commissioned Typhoon, one of the Dominion’s most dashing and brilliant gallopers in the 1945/46 season, has been recommissioned at Awapuni, where he has been responsible for some merry sprints.

Better Placed Mr W. S. Goosman’s Pomade has not scored out of his turn, for in 16 starts last season, he was not even placed. This fact probably led to him being placed in a lower grade, and at the Hunt Club meeting at New Plymouth he won a double, the Trial Steeples and the EgmontWanganui Hunt Steeplechase in the same afternoon. Proper placing in this instance proved profitable. Ohinemuri Programme The £750 Poland Cup will be the principal' attraction at Paeroa on September 27, while the £450 Flying Handicap will bring forward a fine lot of capable sprinters in the pink of form.
