SCHOOL COMMITTEE

AUGUST MEETING SMALL ATTENDANCE There was a rather small attendance at the August meeting of the Whakatane District High School Committee held at the High School on Tuesday. Those present were Messrs. J. Wilson (chair), J. Duthie (secretary), F. Clarke (treasurer), F. W. Lysaght, W. Whittaker and W. Armstrong. Accounts Accounts totalling £l6 3s lid were passed for payment. Sandpits Not Favoured In answer to a letter asking that the committee be compensated to the extent of £ls for repairs to the sandpit at the primary school the Education Board replied that they could not grant the amount. Sandpits were not favoured as they were considered a source of disease. Mr Wilson said that when the sandpit cropped up again it should be scrapped altogether. Donations Donations were received from the Whakatane Lawn Tennis Club, the Whakatane Swimming Club and the Drama Club for the use of school facilities. The Tennis Club asked to use the school courts again in the coming season as their own would not be ready until early in the New Year. This was readily granted. The swimming club sought permission to use the school baths and mentioned the possibility of these being needed two nights a week. This was granted subject to the water supply being adequate. It was decided to forward letters thanking each of the bodies for their donations.

Pedestrian Crossing

A letter from the Borough Council stating that the traffic inspector would instruct school patrols to attend the infant school crossing was received.

Mr Wilson said he understood that arrangements had been made and that patrols would be instituted there at an early date. High School

In answer to the committee’s representations regarding a High School for Whakatane the Education Board wrote that a second post primary school at Edgecumbe had been suggested. Two officers of the Department were attending a meeting at Edgecumbe in September and the Board asked that representatives of the committee attend if possible. It was decided that figures should be prepared and that as many members as possible attend the meeting. Visiting Committee

In his report the Headmaster recommended that the visiting committee call at the Hospital and Ohope Side-school. Mr Wilson said he thought members, should visit the Hospital if possible as the scheme was going very well.

Messrs. G. H. Dainton and J. W. Wilson were appointed as visiting committee for the month.
