FANCY DRESS BALL

SCHOOL CHILDREN ENTERTAIN GAY MAN AWAKE EVENING. A very successful Fancy Dress Ball and Entertainment was given, by the children of the Manawahe School in the Manawahe Hall on Friday, August 22. The programme consisted of singing, choral speaking, individual recitations ‘and folk dances. The main attraction was a series of Maypole Dances, which concluded the entertainment. The children’s performance in the dancing items reflected great credit on Mrs Reid, who had spent considerable time in 'training them. Dresses worn by the children represented much ingenuity and many hours of work on the part of those who produced them. Prizes for fancy dresses were awarded as follows:- " Std. 2 to F. II Girls. Best Costume: Judith Jones (Father Christmas). Most Original Costume: Margaret Crawford (Lolly Seller). Std. 2 to F. II Boys. Best Costume: Kelvin Rimmer (Cowboy). Most Original Costume: David Crawford (Golliwog). Primers to Std. I, Boys and Girls. Best Costume: Hugh Blade (Jockey). Most Original Costume: Don Munro (Skeleton).

Pre-School Children. Best Costume: Wynn Appleby (Dutch Girl). Most Original Costume: Malcolm Munro (Jockey). The following children were also in fancy dress: Diana Hopkins, Gipsy; Rosemary Bayliss, Swiss Maid; Elsie Lambert, New Zealand Cuts; Grace Sweetman, all Nose; Don Edwards, Scarecrow; Arthur Edwards, Girl; Johnny Bowden, Reckitt’s Blue Bag; Cathrine Lambert, Fairy Queen; Jocelyn Reid, Gipsy Dancer; Marie Edwards, Little Red Riding Hood; Ramon Edwards, Red Indian; Judith Hopkins, Queen of the Flowers; Ngaio Bayliss, Dutch Girl; Maurice Anderson, Clown; Neil Hopkins, Sailor; Pat O’Connor, Clown; Michael O’Connor, Elf; Stephen McPike, Reckitt’s Bag Blue; Winnie Lambert, Rose Fairy; Jill Jones, Clematis Fairy; Colleen Munro, Night; Alan Theobald, Black Cat; Ray Lambert, Cowboy; Colleen Crawford, Alice Blue Gown; Marilyn Reid, Little Miss Muffett; Ivor Jones Cowboy; Bruce Crawford, Fireman. Following supper for the. children and the adults, the chairman of the school committee, Mr Dennehy, extended thanks to Mr and Mrs Reid for their efforts in producing the entertainment, to the parents for their support as evidenced by the number of children in fancy dress, to the people of the district and visitors whose attendance had contributed, in no small way, to the success of the evening and to the ladies who had so ably assisted with the supper.

The evening concluded with dancing for the adults.
