WAIMANA NEWS

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE There was a large gathering of local and neighbouring institute members at the birthday celebrations of the Waimana Women’s Institute which was held '.recently. Mrs Reuben Looney presided. The proceedings opened with the singing of the Ode to Friendship. Mrs Woolfield then read the Aspirations.

The minutes were read and confirmed, after, which Mrs Looney read Mrs Watts’ most inspiring letter from “Home and Country.” Two new members were welcomed, Mrs T. G. King and Mrs O’Kane. A telegram conveying birthday greetings was received from Mrs R. Black,

Tauranga. Members handed in stationery for Corso, and it was decided to send a large tin of fat also. Members then joined, in a musical parcel. A play entitled “In ‘ Waltz-time” was presented by a number of mem- > bers of the Drama Circle and was greatly enjoyed by all, the players receiving a hearty ovation. The competitions for the day were:—

Violets for effect: Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs King 2, Mrs F. Bell 3. Bowl of shrubs: Mrs R. Looney 1, Mrs F .Bell 2, Mrs R. Looney 3. Single flower: Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs H. Bell 2, Mrs J. Boynton 3. Double flower: Mrs J. Boynton 1, Mrs H. Bell 2, Mrs King 3. Vegetable: Mrs C. White 1, Mrs Hewitt 2, Mrs F. Bell 3.

A delicious afternoon tea was served by the members, and pride of place went to a lovely birthday cake adorned with 18 candles, made by Mrs Wylde and iced -by Mrs Print of Whakatane.

The president thanked all who helped with the function, also the judges, and stated how gratifying ifcr was to see so many visitors present from other Institutes.

Visiting members then took the opportunity of thanking the Wai-mana-Nukuhou Institute for the pleasant afternoon and extended best wishes for successful meetings in years to come. The singing of the National Anthem closed the meeting.
