PHILATELY

BAY OF PLENTY SOCIETY FIRST ANNUAL MEETING There was an excellent attendance at the first annual meeting of the Bay of Plenty Philatelic Society, held in the Borough Council Chambers last Tuesday evening, and over which Mr H. O. Garaway presided. Past activities and prospects for the future were discussed and an interesting ‘quiz’ session held at the close of the meeting.

In his annual review the chairman stated that nine general and one executive meetings had taken place all of which had been well attended by very enthusiastic members. Displays had been given as under: ‘Ship Stamps’, ‘N.Z. Air-mail Covers’, ‘Egyptian’, ‘Side-face N.Z.’, ‘Sundry Covers’ and ‘Album of Covers’. Some interesting papers were also presented by the president (1898 and allied pictorials); Mr K. N. Hannah (watermark humour); Mr C. Kingsley-Smith (Yugoslavia Centennial). All these items had been warmly appreciated. The competitions held during the year had likewise created considerable interest and the general knowledge displayed was remarkable. The balance sheet showed a credit of £6 2s -9d which could be considered very good in view of the fact that the club had been functioning for only one year, Mr Garaway concluded by thanking all members and officers for their close co-operation during the year and especially the secretary, Mr Tom Dixon.

The election of officers resulted:— President: Mr H. O. Garaway. Vice-president: Mr C. R. Coates. Exchange Superintendent: Mr K. N. Hannah.

Secretary and Treasurer: Mr T. Dixon. Committee: Messrs. R. S. Craddock, L. Carter, W. H. Whittaker, Mrs Cowie and Miss Morgan. Auditor: Mr C. R. Coates.

An interesting competition on N.Z. Stamps given by Mr R. Herbison was won by P. Parsons. The evening concluded with a light supper.
