GERMANS IN RUSSIA
MAY TOTAL MILLIONS A message from Berlin states that the Social Democratic Party’s headquarters in Hanover has received nearly 1,500,000 letters in one month since it invited Germans to record names of relatives believed to be in Russia, ■ the British-licensed newspaper Telegraph said. The task was undertaken after the Soviet Union announced it held 890,532 German prisoners. Some Germans had estimated the number of prisoners there at about 3,000,000. Letters were still arriving in Hanover at the rate of about 35,000 a day, the Telegraph said. Approximately 54,000 letters have been catalogued. Of these, 11,628 were from persons whose relatives have written from Russian prison camps and 42,673 from Germans reporting missing relatives.
