SCHOOL FOR GUIDES
TRAINED IN MOUNTAINEERING WORK Applications may shortly be called by the Public Service Commissioner for the school being -established by fhe Tourist and Publicity Department to train men in mountain guiding. Lectures and a syllabus of practical instruction were being prepared and the school would train eight men, said the general manager of the Department, Mr L. J. Schmitt, recently. Once instructed in all departments of guiding, the men will work at the various mountain resorts throughout the Dominion as a career. Trainees will be fully instructed in recognising different conditions of ice, snow ans weather, and will learn first-aid and general conduct under mountain rigours. When too old for active guiding work, the men would be employed in related avenues not involving arduous work. Mr Schmitt said that applicants would need to be in their early twenties. Preference would be given to returned servicemen, and the training period would probably be 2or 3 years. The syllabus would include ski instruction.
