Labour and Employment

The appointment of Mr J. McGlone, of Rotorua, as District Officer of the Department of Labour and Employment, follows the amalgamation of the separate Departments of Labour and National Employment Service, which will now be conducted as one. Mr McGlone’s area will comprise Whakatane and Opotiki, centres which have hitherto been administrated from Tauranga. The main work of the Department of Labour was to administer the labour laws of New Zealand. The main acts under which staffs worked were the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act (1925); Factories Act (1946); Shops and Offices Act (1921-22); Agricultural Workers’ Act (1936); Fair Rents Act (1936); Scaffolding and Excavation Act (1922), which covers safety measures; Apprentices' Act (1923); Weights and Measures Act (1925); Annual Holidays Act (1944); Minimum Wages Act (1944); and a number of minor ones.
