Being a skilled operation requiring long years of exacting training—it ranks high in esteem among shoemen. Illustration shows part of a shoe “upper" being cut by hand. Not all portions of a skin are suitable, blemishes must be avoided; furthermore it is,a natural characteristic of leather to stretch in one direction while remaining taut in the other.
