RABBIT CONTROL

PONGAKAWA BOARD JULY MEETING A meeting of the Pongakawa Babbit Board was held at Paengaroa on July 9. Present: Messrs. J. M. Blaymires (chairman), A. H. Jamieson, E. O. MacDougall, R. F. Black, M. B. McKenzie, C. H. Davis and the secretary. An apology for absence was tendered on behalf of Mr D. J. Dennedy and leave of absence was granted. Alleged Worrying Mr Davis stated he had been in touch with Mr Evans of the Lands and Survey Department regarding his complaint that Mr Pevreal’s dogs had worried some sheep and Mr Evans was now satisfied that Mr Pevreal’s dogs were not responsible. Government Legislation

The secretary was directed to write to Mr Sullivan, M.P., enquiring whether the Government has any intention of introducing legislation affecting the Rabbit Boards and asking him whether he'could obtain a copy of any proposed Bill for the Board’s perusal. The chairman and secretary were directed to take what action they thought fit. Rate Collections The secretary was congratulated on the fact that 90 per cent, of the rates levied for 1946/47 had been paid and it was resolved to place on record the Board’s appreciation of the work done. - Inspector’s Report An idea of the area worked over is contained in the following extract from the Inspector’s report. We have poisoned 10,600 acres and fumigated 10,100 acres using 8841bs of phosphorised pollard, 921bs cyanogas and 2£ gallons carbon bi sulphide. During this period the weather has been very unsettled and poisoning operations have been considerably retarded, but we have still been able to show good results in most places. I have had a man on casual work poisoning from Grant’s down to Whakatane Paper Mills property and here the results have been good. He has put in one week’s work-, to finish this job. On the grass lands at Rerewhakaitu we have the rabbits well under control, but there are still a lot of rabbits on the native block between Lake Rerewhakaitu and Rotomahana.
