TOWN PLANNING

URGENT NEED FOR WHAKATANE RESERVING FLOODED AREAS Cr R. Morpeth raised an important point at the Borough Council meeting last Monday when he enquired of the Mayor as to whether any further information had been received re.garding the projected l visit to the town of an officer from the Town Planning Department.

The Mayor stated that although the promise of such a visit had been received some months ago nothing had transpired.’ “It is an urgent matter for us,” said Cr Morpeth, “to follow this up in view of the buildings which are going up- in the areas subject to flood. We know that these areas should not be built on but we have no power to prevent that until the town is laid out on proper townplanning lines.”

The Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry) agreed with' the necessity for having the Borough town-planned as early as possible, and added that under the present conditions, the council was powerless to prevent people building their homes, anywhere providing they had purchased the land, and had submitted plans in conformity with the regulations.

It was decided to write the Department urging that no time be lost in sending the official to Whakatane for the purpose of conferring with the council.
