SCOUT SOCIAL

POPULAR THORNTON GATHERING POINTS CUP PRESENTED The Thornton Hall was well filled last Tuesday evening, the occasion being a Social and Dance in the interests of the local Scout Troop and Cub Pack. The proceedings were informal and interesting, with Mr W. Arbuckle acting as a very efficient M.C.

The main feature of the occasion was the going-up ceremony sf four Cubs, to the Scout Troop, which was carried out in an impressive manner in the centre of the hall, with Akela (Miss K. Adams) passing on the young members of her pack to Scoutmaster Don Scott, and his assistants. District Commissioner N. Matthews presented his warrant to A.S.M. W- Adams, and the much coveted Bushman’s Thong, to T.L. Harry Nqwton, and „ P.Ls. Gordon Scott and John Mexted. He warmly congratulated all concerned. County Commissioner C. King-sley-Smith, presented the FergusBoyd Cup, which was won by Thornton Troop at the last County Rally to S.M. Scott, warmly congratulating him on the performance of his boys and on his own efficient training and interest. Replying S.M. Scott mentioned the fine work of his assistants A.S.M.s Malcolm Law and W. Adams, and mentioned also the unfailing co-operation of the Thornton Committe*e. Much appreciated items were rendered by an instrumental quartette from the Whakatane Band, comprising Bandsmen L. Broadmore, G. Skelton, K. Jarrett and under the conductordjhip of Bandmaster W. Jarrett. Another surprise was the vocal items by the Thornton Institute Glee Club, a group of ladies who supplied some wellknown choruses nicely harmonised and balanced. We sincerely hope we hear more of them,. Bright music for dancing was supplied by a number of players, including an interlude on the pipes, by Piper Jim Law. , Supper was served by a capable committee of ladies, assisted by the Scouts.
