SAWMILLING UNITS

OPERATION IN BAY OF PLENTY Fifteen new bush sawmilling units were put into operation in the Ro-torua-Bay of Plenty district between October of last year and April 15, bringing the number of mills operating to 48, In the same period the number of male employees in the industry grew from 1465 to 1638, an overall increase of 173. However, there are still 73 vacancies registered with the district officer of the National Employment Department, compared with 70 as at October 15. The majority of the additional mills are new plants, but some are concerns that for various reasons were not in operation in October. Two each of these new plants are situated respectively at Rotorua, Putaruru and Tauranga, and one each at Te Whaiti, Mokai, Atiamuri, Matata, Whakamarama, Oranui, Ngawaro, Waiohou and Whakatane. One new mill at Putaruru and one at Te Whaiti are being built. ,
