PIG COMPETITIONS

RECENTLY CONCLUDED ENCOURAGING PRODUCTION The 1947 Tomoana porker and baconer competitions were recently Concluded at the Westfield freezing works. These competitions, which are annual fixtures, aim at demonstrating that New Zealand can produce pigs of a type eminently suitable 'to the British market besides encouraging the production of good quality carcases. Prizes’totalling £IOOO are awarded and this amount includes the sum of £165 as prize money in the special young farmers’ section.

Four districts, Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty as well as the winning teams sent on from Gisborne, Wellington, Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki were represented in the competitions. There were 2500 pigs on display at Westfield and a total for the competition of 4196. Judges for the competitions were: Messrs. T. Marks, A. Ramsay, J. Anderson, F. Merrittt, C. H. M. Sorensen with whom were associated Mr D. Smith and Mr A. Long will. In the field great assistance has been afforded the competition by the Supervisors of the District Pig Councils, Mr H. H. Preston-North-land, Mr H. E. Clark, Auckland; Mr C. W. Wallace, Waikato; and/Mr F. Barwell, Bay of Plenty, who right throughout the full day occupied in judging have keenly followed the pointing of the entries from their respective areas. Results
