DANGER OF COLLAPSE
WHAKATANE RIVER BRIDGE TEST IN RECENT FLOOD “What will happen if the Whakatane river bridge collapses under the strain of the flood waters like we had last weekend?” asked Cr S. Shapley at the Borough Council meeting last Monday evening. “It will mean that the whole of the Borough will be left high and dry and completely' cut off from the main highway.”
The Mayor: I agree. It was only tw'o inches from the top during the peak of the flood, and with the logs crashing against it, it was quivering so much that the Inspector considered it too dangerous for use and held up the traffic. Cr Shapley pointed out that if the bridge should be washed away during a flood the only means of access would be a liine-mile circuit by way of White Pine Bush. He mentioned also the serious erosion taking place at the bridge approaches. The council decided to write the P.W.D. drawing its urgent attention to the state of the bridge.
