RUGBY FOOTBALL

WEEKEND GAMES VERY MUDDY CONDITIONS Conditions were very muddy at the Domain on Saturday. The ball was extremely greasy and difficult to handle. Good kickers ’had. a bad day of it too as to kick a heavy, slippery ball with any certainty was almost impossible. A particularly muddy patch in one field proved very treacherous and several players received a liberal coating of mud as a result of a tackle in it. The few spectators who attended sought what meagre shelter the trees had to offer with varying degrees of satisfaction. It appeared however that only those who were very, very keen on football were to be seen.

Following are the results of the games played:— Juniors Two junior games were played.. Both were very good taking into consideration the conditions under which they were played. The game between United and Waimana was the best of the two and Waimana were rather unlucky in that the scpres were not closer. United scored a win by 12—0. The scorers were Carling (2 tries and penalty) and Quigg. Mr White was referee. PAROA 6, POROPORO 3

Though not as brilliant as the first game the match between Paroa and Poroporo was keenly contested. The scoring remained close and the game could have easily been anyone’s. For the winners B. Wharewera and D. Keepa scored trees. Poroporo’s three points came from a try by P. Paul. • Mr Breward was referee. SENIOR GAMES POROPORO 3, UNITED 0

The absence of some of United’s star players, among them McGougan and Cave had much to do towards the outcome of this match. The ground had already been ploughed up by the juniors and was in a very bad state when the seniors took the field.

It was from a dribbling rush by the forwards that T. Tunui scored the only try of the match. United tried hard to make up their lost ground but were unsuccessful. It came as a surprise to spectators when Dick Curran the junior half was put on the wing to replace Rowson who was injured. Curran shows definite promise, a fact which is apparently recognised by the senior team. Mr Mitchell was referee. GALATEA 13, WAIRAKA 12 A friendly match which started very late was won by the visiting team. Wairaka put up a good showing and only lost by one point. The teams dispensed with half-time and played right through. j Scorers for Galatea were K. Rangi (try and 2 conversions), M. Toetoe and A. Kaka.

For Wairaka Fraser, Riini/ Matai and Crapp scored tries. Mr Whitty was referee. WHAKATANE REPS. The following are the Whakatane Senior Reps, to play Waikohu on Saturday at the Domain. Team to assemble at the cricket pavilion at 2 p.m. Rowson, Laurie, Hohua, Ratahi, Tina Riini, Hurran, Crapp, Berg, Cleland, Dodds, Martin, Campbell, Wilson, Hona. Reserves: Backs, Morpeth, Nuku, M. Harawira; forwards, Semmens, A. Martin, C. Tetahi. BAY REPRESENTATIVES Approaching Rugby representative matches of interest to Bay of Plenty followers, are as follows: July 16: Thames Valley v Bay of Plenty, at Tauranga (senior and junior).
