COVERED WAY

PROPOSED HOSPITAL SCHEME STRONG PROTESTS RAISED Some strong protests were raised against the proposed covered way for the ambulance to back in and discharge patients, took place at the Hospital Board meeting on Thursday. They arose out of a recommendation from the works committee that the roof be raised 12 inches to allow for any alteration in the height of the road.

Members stated that this would add another £SO or thereabouts on to the cost of the project as a “hip” would be necessary. A suggestion that a smaller shelter be built was overruled by Mr McCready. The structure should provide shelter for nurses who often had to walk through puddles i of water between the hospital and annexe.

Mr McGougan suggested canvas sides which could be let down a few feet on a bad day. Several members expressed their approval of the idea.

Mr Caulfield suggested that levels be taken in case the proposed extra 12 inches was not enough. Mr Buddie said that in his opinion the building would be a funnel. Other members were of the opinion that this would not be the case. It was then decided to obtain levels of the road before definite action was proceeded with.

A further suggestion was that an enclosed corridor be put across for the nurses’ convenience and that the ambulance discharge its patients into this.

It was decided to refer the matter back to the works committee •with the recommendation outlined above.
