STRANGE MALADY

SOCCER PLAYER AFFECTED LOSS OF PULSE In a scrap book of press cuttings about soccer loaned to the Beacon by Mr Frank Cameron appears an interesting article regarding a player who lost his pulse. The player was R. J. Matthews who visited New Zealand with the English team in 1937. The first symptoms of this strange malady were spasms of numbness in his right arm. Eventually he consulted a doctor. The doctor as well as several specialists were unable to determine the cause of the trouble but various treatments were tried and his arm made a distinct improvement.

Whenever a spasm occurred Matthews pulse stopped. Unfortunately no later information on the player is included in the book.
