WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

WAIMANA-NUKUHOtT JULY MEETING The July meeting of the Waimana- * Nukuhou W.I. was held in the Waimana Hall. Mrs Looney presided over a good attendance of members and several visitors. The singing of the “Ode to Friendship” opened the proceedings, and Mrs I. Savage read the Aspirations. The president then read the president’s letter from “Home and Country,” written by Mrs Barnicoat. The minutes 'were read and adopted and correspondence dealt with. It was stated that a gift of Pioneer Tales, had been sent to a member, Mrs Mortenson, who has left the district. It was decided to hold the Institute birthday as usual in the afternoon .at the August meeting, and neighbouring Institute members to be invited. Large parcels of warm children’s clothing for Corso were handed in, and it was decided that educational articles be brought to the next meeting for Corso. At this stage of the meeting, Mrs Looney called on Mrs N. Clark to come forward and accept a gift from all members, in appreciation of her faithful work and help for the Institute during her 18 years as a member. Mrs Clark, who is leaving Waimana to reside in Opotiki, will be greatly missed from the Institute meetings and the district, stated the speaker. Mrs Clark briefly responded, and thanked all for the gift. Mrs Print, of Whakatane, gave a most interesting demonstration of icing a fruit cake, was followed with keen interest. A one-act play entitled “Green Daffodils” was presented by several Drama Circle members and was well received and enjoyed by all. Thd day’s competitions were:—

Best double flower: Mrs J. Boynton 1, Mrs F. Bell 2, Mrs H. Bell 3. Best single flower: Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs F. Bell 2, Mrs Stevenson 3. Best vegetable: Mrs C. White 1, Mrs F. Bell 2, Mrs Hewitt 3. Knitted child’s cardigan or jumper: Mrs Mannion 1, Mrs Looney 2, Mrs F. Bell 3.

Savoury meat tart: Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs F. Bell 2. After afternoon tea had been served by the hostesses, Mrs Looney thanked one and all who had assisted in any way at all towards helping with the meeting. The singing of the National Anthem closed the meeting.
