HEAVY RAINS
WHAKATANE AND DISTRICT NO FLOODING IN COUNTY Consistent rainfall since yesterday morning resulted in no less than 4.50 inches being recorded in Whakatane for the 24 hours end®d 9 a.m. this morning. Over the same period 3.97 inches were recorded at Edgecumbe. Surface water is lying over the greater part of the Rangitaiki Plains while the lower lying areas are inundated. There, are no reports to hand however of any flooding of a serious nature though indications are that Galatea and Manawahe tablealnds have received a thorough drenching and there is a likelihood of the land adjoining the Rangitaiki and the Whakatane being subjected to flooding of at least a minor nature. FLOODING IN BOROUGH MARAETOTARA BURSTS BANKS As we go to press we learn that the Maraetotara has again burst its banks at lower Allandale, where the junction of the Alexander and Douglas .Streets is well under water. In lower Douglas Street and Anzac Avenue, the water has escaped and is invading the properties of most of the householders in that area. With rain still falling there is every indication of the inundation becoming worse.
