TELEPHONES FOR PORTUGAL
British telephone material and equipment to the value of over £500,000 was supplied to Portugal last year through the Anglo-Portu-guese Telephone Company. This is revealed in the company’s annual statement published recently. Delivery of these large quantities has been an achievement all the more notable in view of the extensive world demand for telephone equipment. The Company points out: “Every country is short of telephones, and the aggregate shortage involves many hundreds of millions of pounds of expenditure.” It adds: “Our Company, and the Portuguese community generally, are aware that relatively Portugal is getting a good share of the available supplies.” The Company’s programme for 1947 involves the expenditure of approximately £400,000 for the development of Portugal’s telephone services.
