WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

OTAKIRI BRANCH The July meeting of the Otakiri Women’s Institute was held at the hall on Wednesday last. The meeting opened with The Ode to Friendship and the Aspirations were read. Among the usual monthly business was the discussion of a remit for the half-yearly meeting and parcels for a British W.I. Link.

The roll call, a handkerchief and six articles required for an emergeicy trip to hospital, was well responded to.

Mrs J. Murray gave an interesting reading on the life of Princess Elizabeth, this being the subject of this season’s Golden Thread. It was decided to include in next month’s programme a competition. A design for a banner for the “Rangitaiki Plains Calf Club” (Home Section Combined Field Day).

A visiting speaker, Mrs Thomson, gave a moving and inspiring address on the work among Lepers in the 112 hospitals for Lepers, situated in 25 countries of the world as it was Hospital Day the entries for the competition were donated to the Whakatane Hospital, Mrs Hutton undertaking their delivery. The winners of the competitions were: —

Single flower: Mrs Peck 1, Mrs Woodberry 2, Mrs Keir 3. Double flower: Mrs Keir 1, Mrs Irving 2, Mrs Woodberry 3. Best vegetable: Mrs Cobden 1, Mrs Peck 2, Mrs Carr 3. Malt Biscuits: Mrs Peck 1, Mrs Mackrell 2, Mrs Cobden 3. Sponge: Mrs Peck 1, Mrs Jessop and Mackrell 2.

Hotwater bag cover: Mrs Peck 1, Mrs Smith 2, Mrs Mackrell 3. Mrs Peck thanked the speaker, Mrs Thomson, for coming to Otakiri and enlightening the members on the so necessary work and help needed for the stricken Lepers, and Otakiri W.I. decided to do more than usual for them this year.

The meeting was then closed by the singing of the National Anthem.
