LAWN TENNIS CLUB

BENEFIT NIGHT EXCELLENT ITEMS On Wednesday night a benefit concert and picture show in aid of the Whakatane Lawn Tennis Club was given in the Grand Theatre. Public response to the concert was poor and the crowd which attended was not very big. Those who did go were warm in their applause of the performers and the standard of items was excellent.

The programme commenced with the screening of shorts following which the footlights were turned on and the items commenced. The first artist was Mr H. Armstrong who gave two solos, “Bedouin Song” and “Invictus.” A short humorous sketch “The Early Pit” followed the players being members of the Edgecumbe Drama Club.

Mrs C. W. Good then rendered two solos, “I Heard a Forest Praying” and “The Lass with the Delicate Air.”

Mrs Hepburn presented two humorous sketches.

Mr Addison, assisted by Mr C. Ranby gave an exhibition of magic. The programme by the local artists concluded with a selection of choruses by Mr K. Francis who accompanied himself on the guitar. Mr P. Bryers introduced the items.

Following the conclusion of the items there was a short interval before the screening of the film “White Tie and Tails/’ The film was a comedy and was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience.
