UNGAINLY WALK
“BALLET” SHOES REJECTED ENGLISH WOMEN’S FANCIES “Neither the ugly little ballet shoes that are such a craze in America at the moment, nor the longer skirts favoured over there, find much favour in Britain,” writes a London correspondent in the Te Aroha News. “The American ballet shoes give women a most ungainly walk, having no heel and only a suggestion of leather covering the toes, with narrow strips of leather to tie round the ankle. It gives women a barefooted appearance, particularly when worn with nylons, and none of those I have seen wearing them has looked other than acutely uncomfortable.
“Because women in Britain have to concentrate on their coupons and queues for such hours every day, sensible, low-heeled walking shoes are very generally worn, with medium heel, sling-back court shoes favoured for smart occasional wear. The peeptoe styles have been coldshouldered because of the" havoc they wreak on stockings—a most serious matter these days when one pair simply has to last months.”
