Bay of Plenty Beacon. Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. WEDNESDAY, JULY 2, 1947 END OF ANOTHER DAIRYING SEASON
WITH the end of June another dairying season has come to its conclusion. Work never comes to a full stop in,dairying districts, so that there is nothing spectacular to mark the end of the old season and the commencement of the new season. On most farms of the Whakatane district milk production is now at its lowest point, and to that extent both the farm workers and the herds of cows are having a brief respite from the daily routine. The season just ended has been better than the average on most farms. It is difficult to make comparisons between the seasons, because floods, droughts and a hundred and one other troubles affect some farms more than others. There has been some slight improvement in prices, but not as much as producers would have liked in view of the way that farmers’ costs are also mounting. With the 1947-48 dairying season getting under way, farmers will hope for a mild winter and an early spring. On these weather factors, which nobody can predict, depends so much the question of whether production for the season equals or exceeds that of the past season. Given reasonable weather during the next twelve months the dairy farmers of Whakatane district can be confidently depended on to make another large contribution to the exports of food to Britain.
