NOT LOST FOREVER

MISSING TREASURES “BEACON’S” ASSISTANCE Not all of the varied treasures listed as “Lost” in every issue of the “Beacon” are lost forever. Many advertisers who recover their possessions are convinced that “it pays to advertise.” For instance a raincoat advertised recently as having been “taken by mistake from Edgecumbe Hall” was brought to the Beacon Office and next day its owner came and collected it.

A pair of reading glasses brought to the Beacon Office and advertised as “found” soon had their owner along to claim them. A silver filigree brooch advertised as being “a keepsake from a deceased soldier” turned up at the Beacon Office safely and all who read that advertisement will be glad it is to be restored to its owner.

Numerous purses containing money seem to get lost around the town, but they are not necessarily lost and gone forever. One woman who lost a purse containing £8 on Christmas Eve received it back following the advertising of her loss. No less interesting is the fact that many people who find lost articles lose no time in bringing them to the Beacon Office, which is recognised as the depot for lost property. Some people who lose bank notes seem reluctant to advertise their loss, thinking that it is not worth while. However it is an indication of the honesty and helpfulness of the people of the district that much of the lost money is returned to its rightful owners.
