STRAYING STOCK

TOO MUCH ON THE ROADS IN WHAKATANE COUNTY Although the Whakatane County Inspector impounded no less than 26 horses and 16 head o£_ cattle during the past four weeks there are, in the opinion of councillors, more stray stock on the roads than they have seen for a long time. The inspector reported that 26 horses and 16 head of cattle were impounded from the County roads and the State Highways in the Poroporo, Paroa, Matata, Te Teko, Awakeri and Taneatua districts. Driving, pound and sale fees collected £3B.

One horse straying on the State Highway near Te Teko was hit by a motor car and had to be destroyed.

“I spent 1 h days collecting horses and cattle from the State Highways last week and in connection with this I wish to state that I am not getting any assistance whatsoever from the Public Works Department or Transport Department,” he said. Two settlers were warned for permitting milking" cows to stray on public roads, one at Awakeri and another at Waimana. Stock on Highways The County Clerk reported that he had conferred with the District

Engineer in Tauranga who stated that on application from the council he would be prepared to favourably consider having his Department co-operate with the council and the Transport Department inspector in having unattended stock impounded from State Highways. The County Clerk stated that he had advised the District Engineer that the council was happy to collect stock found at large on a State Highway when it was having stock from county roads taken to the pound. The council considered both the Tauranga Department and the Main Highways Board, in conjunction with the county, could ensure that State Highways could be kept free from the menace of wandering stock. •

The council resolved that application be made to the Resident Engineer accordingly. Dozen Straying Horses ""in commenting on this Cr Leslie said that while he had been regularly on the road near Poroporo during the last fortnight he had seen a dozen or two dozen horses on the road. Cr A. McGougan: Opouriao is just as bad. Cr Butler: There is more stock at large than there has been for a long time. Cr W. Hunter: Everywhere you go it is the same. This was due to the seasonal shortage of feed, councillors considered.
