Long Council Meeting The June meeting of the Whakatane County Council commenced at 11 a.m. and continued until 4.45 p.m., with an interval for lunch. Many items on the order paper resulted in long discussions before finality was reached. C. McCready when Whakatane County Councillors were making good-humoured comments abou| the long list of 13 clauses in a lease for the Pukaahu Hot Springs Domain which had been drawn up by the council’s works committee. “I think you should rename it ‘The Octopus. Clamp’.” Cr J. L. Burnett added: “Yet we were told a few minutes ago that councillors were not businessmen!”

The speaker for the day was Canon Frazer, who gave a much appreciated commentary on changes that he had witnessed during his youth spent in Ireland and his many years as a clergyman in the slums of Liverpool.
