SCHOOL COMMITTEE
JUNE MEETING MANY SCHOOL MATTERS The monthly meeting of the Whakatane District High School Committee was attended on Monday by Messrs. J. W. Wilson (chair), Duthie (secretary), F. A. Clarke (treasurer) G. Mahy, F. W. Lysaght, G. N. Dainton, W. Whittaker and H. D. Paterson. An apology was received from Mr W. E. Armstrong. Accounts Accounts totalling £4O 11s 6d were passed for payment. Caretaker A letter was received from the Education Board stating that the committee could employ a full-time caretaker and an assistant female cleaner. " , Mr Wilson stated that he had secured a married couple who had agreed to take the position. Home Life Building
A further letter stating that the erection of a home life block must be deferred until the building situation eased was received. It was decided to write to the Minister again. Learn to Swim Pool A request for the committee’s support in an application for a subsidy on the learn to swim pool at Ohope was received from Mr F. Mahy, Snr. It was decided to forward a letter supporting the application. Evening Classes
Authority to connect the premises to be used in connection with the evening classes in plumbing with the electricity supply at a cost of not more than £lB was received from the Education Board. It was stated that the work on this building was proceeding. Appreciation
A donation of two guineas and a letter of thanks for the use of the school basketball courts was received from the Whakatane Basketball Association. The chairman commented on this excellent gesture and it was decided to forward a letter of thanks to the Association. Attendance Attendance figures were given for the month as under:— Primary, 540; Secondary, 240; Hospital, 18; Ohope Side School, 53. Visiting Committee’s Report Mr Paterson presented the report in which the following points were mentioned: ' » The hospital teacher was doing an excellent job but was handicapped by the lack of materials. She had been given all the material possible from the school but many of the books she required were unobtainable. Cycle Sheds A lack of cycle accommodation was reported and it was also recommended that one of the cycle sheds should be moved to the same site as the one recently shifted. One of the existing shelter sheds could be moved face to face with the one beside the range to form a useful shed.
, These matters would be put to the architect on his next visit. > Tree Planting The committee advocated the planting of trees in various parts of the grounds. It was decided to go into the matter. Visiting Committee The following were appointed visiting committee for the month: Messrs. F. W. Lysaght. and W. E. Armstrong.
