RATES FOR YEAR
PONGAKAWA RABBIT BOARD INCREASE OF TEN PER CENT. Due to increased wages and other costs the Pongakawa Rabbit Board, whose district includes the western part of the Whakatane County, has increased its rates for 1947-48 by ten per cent. The rate for the original Pongakawa Rabbit District and also for the portion that is in the Matata Riding of the Whakatane County will be rated at 3 3/1 Od per acre. The residue will pay 1 l/10d per acre.
Those present at the June meeting of the board held at Paengaroa were Messrs. J. N. Blaymires (chairman), A. H. Jamieson, R. C. McDougall, R. F. Black, M. B. McKenzie, C. H. Davis and the secretary, Mr A. H. Dukeson. An apology for absence was tendered on behalf of Mr D. J. Dennehy. Costs Higher by £450
The board’s estimates for the year 1947-48 were adopted subject to the rate being increased by 10 per cent, over the previous year’s rates to cover the higher rate of wages as fixed by the new award. The secretary stated that the higher rates of pay involved a 10 per cent, increase in costs for the current year. The total additional cost being approximately £450. The previous rate of pay for a rabbiter was £5 15s and the new award is £6 4s per week. The salary of the secretary was increased to £2OO per annum. Rates for the current year are payable on August 1. A discount of 5 per cent, is allowed on rates paid within 20 days.
