FIRST AID FILMS

SHOWN AT WHAKATANE ST. JOHN’S ENTERPRISE Showing commendable enterprise, the Whakatane St. John Ambulance Brigade was able to arrange a visit of a carload of Te Aroha St. John’s men on Saturday. The large audience in the St. John Ambulance Hall on Saturday appreciated the showing of first aid films by Dr. W. R. Lawrence, of Te Aroha, For an hour and a half Dr. Lawrence showed reel after reel, with brief comments. These films were recently made in the United States to assist in the training of men and women in first aid work. It was a most interesting and instructive evening, not only for qualified ambulance men, but also for members of the public who attended to show their support of the St. John Ambulance organisation. One reel showed how to make a stretcher from a rug and two poles, how to carry an injured person on a stretcher, on a chair, and by linked hands.

How to control bleeding by pressure on the arteries at the pressure points was well illustrated in another reel. Most instructive were the reels showing how the lungs work, the mechanics of breathing being demonstrated on the screen with a good many feet of film taken with the aid of X-ray equipment. Last but not least there was a reel about care of the feet. The importance of correct shoes was stressed, and the detrimental effect of fashionable high heels was shown in a way that must convince all who see this film.

After the screening supper was served by the ladies’ committee. Opportunity was taken by the Whakatane president, Mr A. J. Canning, to thank Dr. Lawrence for the entertaining and instructive programme provided. Dr. Lawrence was a great supporter of St. John Ambulance work in Te Aroha district, and by coming to Whakatane he had certainly done his good deed for the day. Whakatane was also fortunate in having the active support of the medical men of the district.

Mr Canning also thanked the Te Aroha men who had accompanied Dr. Lawrence and by their presence. Superintendent E. Ramson also thanked the visitors and wished them a good trip to their homes.
