CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ACTIVITIES
MANY matters of interest to everyone in the Whakatane district have received the attention of the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce during recent months. Although attendances at most general meetings are not as large and representative of all sections of the business community as could be desired much good work is being done. The executive of the Chamber has done a great deal in a quiet way by following up matters discussed at general meetings. Perhaps it is this appreciation of the constant work of the president, secretary and other executive members which encourages so many financial members to be absent from general meetings. Business people are apparently well satisfied that their interests and those of the district at large are in capable hands.
Taneatua School Jubilee Plans for celebrating the golden jubilee of schools in the Taneatua district will be discussed at a meeting to be held in the Taneatua Hall supper room on Monday, June 30. This meeting has been convened by the Taneatua School Committee to enable old pupils, former teachers and present and past residents of the Taneatua, Opouriao and Pekatahi Schools to get together and form a committee to organise suitable jubilee celebrations. Rotary Club Luncheon At last week’s luncheon of the Whakatane Rotary Club President H. G. Warren reported that Secretary A. J. Canning and himself had represented the club at the charter night of the Matamata Rotary Club. They brought back specimens of the printed programme which should be helpful when the Whakatane club holds its Charter Night in the future. Arrangements were discussed for members to visit the Rotorua club.
R.S.A. Delegates The Whakatane R.S.A. was represented at the 31st annual meeting of the Dominion Council of the New Zealand Returned Services Association in Wellington last week by the president, Mr L. H. Brown, of Whakatane, and Mr C. R. Wilson, of Edgecumbe.
Air Force Association The Air Force Association will hold a meeting in the Whakatane Air Training Corps Hall this evening to elect officers for the year and discuss other matters in the interests of former Air Force personnel. Hockey Teams at Auckland The Whakatane Hockey Association’s men’s and ladies’ teams are competing in the Auckland Country week hockey tournament which opens today. Missionary Visitor The Rev. R. M. Ryburn, M.A., who recently returned from the missionary work in India where he is principal of the Kharar Boys High School, conducted the Presbyterian services at Edgecumbe, Ohope and Whakatane yesterday.
Church Parade The Whakatane St. John Ambulance Brigade members attended a Church parade at St. George’s Anglican Church last evening. Services Appreciated
The Tauranga Chamber of Commerce last week passed a resolution to place on record appreciation of the services rendered to the community by the late Mr F. J. Burt, of Matata.
