CHANGING BUSES

WOULD BE BETTER IN TOWN COMFORT OF PASSENGERS That Road Service buses travelling between Rotorua and Gisborne should come into Whakatane and not transfer Wha katane passengers at Whakatane West was a recommendation put forward by the Chamber of Commerce at its meeting on Tuesday.

The Chamber is to make a suggestion to the Railways Department that the afternoon bus should leave Rotorua a little earlier, say, at 1.30 p.m., and bring Whakatane passengers right into the town before continuing to Taneatua, Opotiki and Gisborne.

There were no conveniences for passengers changing from one bus into another at Whakatane West, said members in a general discussion. In summer the open roadside was dusty, and in bad weather passengers might have to stand round in the rain. Often it took ten minutes or so to change passengers and luggage, which was about as long as it would take to come into the town. The present route from Whakatane West to Taneatua was over a dusty road, whereas buses could keep to the tarsealed highway by entering the town.

All considered that the advantages of bringing the buses into Whakatane and changing passengers and luggage in the Strand would far outweigh the disadvantages. It would also give a better service for people arriving in or leaving Whakatane. In its letter to the Road Services Department- the Chamber is to set out the position and stress both the advantages to Whakatane passengers and through passengers of transferring passengers in the town, and also the advantage to be gained from following the tarsealed highway all the way.

It was considered that the management of the Road Services would appreciate these suggestions and alter its timetable slightly to meet the needs of the district.
