FATE OF MANY DOGS

POISONING INVESTIGATED MYSTERY STILL UNSOLVED Appreciation of the efforts of police officers who had spent a lot of time investigating an epidemic of dog poisoning in Whakatane, earlier in the year was expressed by members of the Chamber of Commerce when this matter was referred to.

At a previous meeting the Chamber had decided to take action on behalf of citizens and had written to the police asking if a detective could be assigned to endeavour to detect the person responsible for the poisoning. In a letter to the Chamber from the Inspector of Police at Gisborne, it was stated that although extensive inquiries had been made by a member of the detective force no information had been received. The area had also been patrolled by the local police officers, but nothing of a suspicious nature had been seen. The president commented that the detective had made an intensive search. There had been a cessation of complaints about dog poisoning lately, so probably the efforts of the Chamber and the co-operation of the police had not been without satisfactory results.
