KING STREET SIREN
REMOVAL TO THE DOMAIN FIRE BOARD’S DECISION At a recent meeting of the Whakatane Fire Board the matter of removing the fire siren from its present site in King Street was again considered. It was decided that subject to the approval and consents of other interested parties, the siren be moved to a new site in the Domain near the Cricket Club’s pavilion.
This decision is the result of complaints with respect to this siren which have been received by the board over a number of years both in the form of correspondence and of deputations. In response to complaints the board decided some months ago to discontinue the sounding of the siren at 8 a.m. daily for test purposes, excepting on Saturday mornings. By reason of the decreased use of the equipment, which is exposed to the weather, major faults developed, culminating in the failure of the equipment through the bearings seizing up.
A decision to sound the siren three times weekly was again the subject of complaints by residents in the locality who petitioned the board for the removal of the siren.
The petitioners and others complaining suggested removing the siren to a site in the Domain, where it will be located several chains from the nearest dwelling.
This the board has now agreed to
