WHAKATANE VISITED
MANAWATU YOUNG FARMERS LONG TOUR BY BUS A party of 27 members of Young Farmers Clubs in the Manawatu district arrived in Whakatane on Friday afternoon from Gisborne in a special bus. They spent the night at the two hotels, visited the Paper Mills in the morning and left for Rotorua after lunch.
Their tour has been arranged by the Tourist Department, and they expected, to reach home on Thursday after making overnight stops at Rotorua, Waitomo Caves and Stratford. ,
In conversation with a “Beacon” representative these young Manawatu farmers intimated that they would have liked to have met members of local Young Farmers Clubs during the period of nearly 24 hours that they spent at Whakatane. However, it seemed to have been nobody’s business to make any arrangements, although no doubt many Whakatane district people would have liked to have met them and made their stay here somewhat more interesting. Some of them went to a dance, but as they were not expected there was a shortage of lady partners.
They were keen to learn as much as possible about farming conditions and not just admire the scenery en route. Only the bus-driver had been here before.
At Hastings and at Gisborne they had the good fortune to be taken to several, farms and were delighted with the hospitality they had received from these farmers. Some of them would have liked to have visited farms on the Rangitaiki Plains, but their schedule did not allow time for this.
