RESULT OF INSPECTION TRIBUTES FROM PATIENTS Mr J. Mullins presided at the June meeting of the Bay of Plenty Hospital Board held at the hospital on Thursday. Present Messrs. A. McGougan, C. A. Suckling, H. C. McCready, J. Caulfield, L. Buddie and A. Mitchell and the secretary, Mr F. Prideaux.
The reports of the Finance and Works Committees together with those from the Medical Superintendent, Matron, Engineer and Fore-man-Storeman were read and adopted. Vacancy on Board After members had paid tributes to the services of the late Mr F. J. Burt, a member who had died since the board’s last meeting, a motion was passed to advise the Whakatane County Council of the vacancy on the board which the council will be required to fill. Superintendent’s Report
In his report for the month of May the Medical Superintendent, Dr. E. T. Dawson, gave the following statistics:— Patients at May 1, 91; at May 31, 89. Daily average for month, 96. Admissions, 156. Discharges, 151. Deaths, three males and four females. Births, 17 males and 17 females. Visiting Committee’s Report The visiting 'Committee for the month of May Messrs. Mitchell and McGougan made a suggestion that the furniture in the waiting room could be improved as it was not very inviting for the . families of patients who had to wait there. Mr Mitchell related that one woman patient who had previously been a patient of hospitals in other countries, had told them that Whakatane compared well with any other. All patients were happy and quite satisfied. Mr McGougan added that the patients had paid tributes to the Medical Superintendent. “They .say it is as good as a tonic when he comes round,” he said. “I don’t think people tell us that just because we are board members.”
Messrs. Buddie and Suckling were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. Matron’s Position The appointment of a matron in succession'to Miss D. M. Runciman, whose term expires in August, was held over until a special meeting which will be held later. ' Mobile X-ray Unit
After some discussion the Board resolved to give its preliminary approval to proposals put forward, by the Health Department in a circular to all hospital boards regarding the use of a mobile X-ray plant for the Waikato and Bay of Plenty area. A similar plant has been operating in Taranaki. The mobile plant was considered more suitable for country work and is of a special type installed in a motor-bus body equipped with dressing and film-processing rooms. The Government proposes to provide the initial cost of the X-ray plant and equipment and hospital boards are being asked to undertake the operation and provide maintenance of the service. Mr Buddie said the board had for years urged the need for combatting the T.B. menace. This was a s,tep in that direction. For that reason he moved that the board give its preliminary approval of the proposals.
Mr Suckling seconded this. Mr McCready said he still thought the campaign against T.B. should be a national concern and the cost should not be borne by hospital boards from rates. There was a strong move among farmers to secure derating, and this would be shown at the next local body elections.. If T.B.'was not a matter for a national effort he would like to know what was. Mr Caulfield said he hesitated to do anything to retard good work, but he thought the cost should be found out of Social Security funds and not out of the board’s funds. Mr Buddie said it was all very well to say that if the board did this it would relieve the State of its obligation. However there had to be unity of effort throughout the country. He thought no one could run the business better than the hospital boards.
Mr McCready said he would not mind if the board’s contribution was pegged, but the proposed rate of l-5d in the £ of rateable value might be heavy in view of the increased valuations to be expected when revaluations of the district were completed. The motion carried without dessent stated that the board gave its preliminary approval subject to the financial and other obligations involved being satisfactory.
