OBSTACLE TO MORE HOUSE BUILDING

THE Whakatane Borough Council has done its best to impress on the Minister of Lands the fact that the operation of the Land Sales Act in the borough.is having the effect of making it difficult for returned servicemen to buy building sections. It is regrettable that such an obstacle to the building of more homes in Whakatane should exist at a./time when so many newcomers are desirous of buying the numerous vacant sections in residential streets. The council intends to keep on urging that there should be some amendment to meet the position that exists in Whakatane and perhaps in other towns. Meanwhile land is lying idle and the need for more houses is urgent

New Year Carnival Whether electric power would be available for illuminating the Strand at New Year was a question asked at the meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council on Monday by Cr J. Creeke who said he had been asked to run the New Year Carnival which had been a feature of the holiday season in former years. Councillors said they hoped the power situation would be easier next summer. The Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry said the carnival was a good advertisement for the town and attracted many visitors.
