WORK DURING MONTH

MORE BUILDING PERMITS REPORTS TO COUNCIL The June meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council was held on Monday. Present: The Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry), and Councillors C. S. Armstrong, R. T. Morpeth, J. H. B. Warner, S. S. Shapley, J. Creeke, A. J. Canning, W. Sullivan and H. G. Warren. Messrs. F. W. Lysaght (Electrical Engineer) and L. D. Lovelock (Town Clerk) were also in attendance. Foreman’s Report The Foreman-Engineer reported as follows: Storm Water Drainage: During the last three weeks most of available labour has been engaged in the laying of 18” additional storm water drainage in the Strand.

Surface drains in Douglas Street, Salonika Street and Anzac Avenue have been cleaned out. Repairs carried out to sheds at Heads.

Trees in Louvain Street, McAlister Street and King Street have been heavily pruned. Concrete crossing slabs and 24” pipes have been made and a small shed built. A start has been made with the dumping of surplus filling at McAlister Street extension. Refuse collection and dump levelling has been carried out. I have suspended the dumping of sawdust at the dump pending improved consolidation.

Water Supply: I went to Auckland last month and secured mains etc. for the Housing Department contract. Six new water connections were made, blowouts repaired. Electrical Engineer’s Report

The report of the Electrical Engineer was as follows:

Main Sub-station Additions: Two of the old original transformers have been dried out and these will be used in connection with some sec-ond-hand switch gear ; purchased from Wellington City Council to increase the capacity of our old substation. This will assist us to carry on until delivery of the new equipment is made available.

New Service Lines: Four new service lines have been erected during the month.

New Installations: The following new installations have been tested and connected to the supply: Ranges 4, cylinders 4, lighting and heating 5. There have also been a number of alterations and additions. Water Works: The pumping plants have been in service every day during the month. The river strainer was blocked and had to be cleaned and new gland packings were fitted to No". 3 pump during the month. Building Permits: Building permits issued for the month are: New residences 3, sheds 3, additions to residences 1, bakehouse 1, garages 1, workshops 1, shed removal 1. The total value of the above buildings being £6809. Inspector’s Report The Borough Inspector reported that seven horses had been impounded in the Whakatane Pound, All were released.

During the past month he had attended to the usual duties of having rubbish removed from the roadsides, and overhanging hedges cut back. Use of Council Chambers An application was received from C. R. Murchison for the use of the Council Chambers meeting room for religious meetings every Saturday morning. The applicant is to be advised that the room is not available as it was not the policy of the council to let it permanently. The Town Clerk explained that three meetins were to be held in the room this weekend. Temporary Storeroom H. M. Dewar made application for a temporary storeroom behind his premises in the brick area. The Building Inspector said this was a building 18ft. by lift, and was necessary for the applicant’s business. He recommended a temporary permit subject to the usual safeguards. A permit was granted subject to the site being to the satisfaction of the inspector. Pipes For a Drain Lodge Whakatane wrote asking the council to pipe a drain running along the eastern boundary of the Lodge’s property in Louvain Street.

The foreman estimated that 44 pipes would be needed to deal with two chains of drain. This would cost £65. The drain was a danger to children and the Lodge wished to improve its frontage. The council decided to notify the Lodge that the cost was approximately £65 and t-hat the council was prepared to meet one-third of the cost if the Lodge and the adjoining property owner would each pay onethird.
