LEARN-TO-SWIM POOL
AT OHOPE BEACH' SUBSCRIBERS TOTAL 2800 Since the beginning of the appeal for funds for the Ohope children’s learn-to-swim pool some years ago there has been a total of 2800 subscribers which shows how completely public opinion supports the pool idea. Since November, 1946 the sum of £lB7 5s was contributed by 1300 persons, but previously nearly 1500 persons had subscribed in former seasons, making a grand total of 2800 subscribers.
This is set out in subscription lists for the past seasons which have been published in the “Beacon” and which have been forwarded to this dffice by Mr F. Mahy, senr., of Ohope. Borough Council’s Support
Support for the proposal to ask the Minister of Internal Affairs for a subsidy or grant for the Ohope learn-to-swim pool was given by the Borough Council in response to a letter from the Ohope Domain Board.
Councillors agreed that money was needed to provide 500 ft. of pipe to carry water to the pool, and that this was a matter which deserved to be subsidised.
There was, however, criticism of the board fence erected round the pool in order to keep out dogs. Councillors described it as unsightly and thought it should be replaced by some other fence more in keeping with the rest of the beach.
