WHAKATANE AIRFIELD

CONSTRUCTION PROVIDED FOR Encouraging to those who have been urging the construction without delay of an airfield to serve the Whakatane district was the intention of proposed airfields in the 10-year plan outlined by the Minister of Works. Air transport would probably prove very attractive' in the immediate future to holiday makers and tourists with limited time for travel, and the Government proposed to extend every facility to make it popular. The airfield at Rotorua is not well placed and it seemed essential to select and develop a better site as soon as possible to fit in with the development of Rotorua. A new airfield was proposed at Whakatane and the existing airfields were to be improved at Tauranga, Opotiki, Rotorua and! Galatea. Air parks for club and private aviation would also be necessary.
