ACCOMMODATION PROBLEM

TAURANGA DISCUSSION *

SINGLE WORKERS’ HOSTEL

The accommodation problem for single workers is very bad in most towns but in Tauranga steps are being taken towards providing lodgings for these people. The following report, from the Bay of Plenty Times, should prove of interest to Whakatane residents in view of the acute shortage of such accommodation in this town.

The view that the Government had built hostels in other places for workers and, personally, he thought the request should go forward, was expressed by the Hon. W. E. Barnard at the monthly meeting of the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce recently, when the president (Mr E. S. Hylton) explained that the letter requesting the establishment of a hostel for civil servants and been held up because it had been pointed out there was a shortage of accommodation in Tauranga for married people.

Mr Barnard stated that any proposal could be destroyed by waiting until married people were housed. The chairman was only making a request to the Government. He moved that the chamber send the letter agreed to at the previous meeting requesting the establishment in Tauranga of a hostel for single workers.

“I do not think married people should be the only ones to be considered,” stated Mr F. N. Christian, in supporting the motion.

A statement that a problem in accommodating single people in the district existed, was made by Mr E. E. Earnshaw, who stated that there was widespread opinion that some appeal to the people of Tauranga might solve the problem. There was a great deal of sympathy for the young people. ' Mr J. B. McKinney pointed out that an appeal had been made on a previous occasion for accommoda-

tion for single people and Tauranga, he thought had been exhausted of what was generally available. He supported the move for a hostel for Tauranga. When put to the meeting Mr Barnard’s motion was carried.

Just before the final whistle Laurie picked the ball up and put in a high kick towards the Waimana goal line. He was right on the spot when the ball landed and scored between the posts. Hohua converted. The whistle went, the final score standing at:

Paroa 42, Waimana 6. Mr J. Keepa was referee. WAIRAKA 24, P.W.D. 5

First blood in this game went to Wairaka. From a penalty kick in front of the P.W.D. goal T. Crapp collected three points. Shortly after Crapp found himself unopposed in possession following a passing rush by the yellow backs. He forced between the posts. R. Crapp converted. Wairaka 8, P.W.D. 0.

K. Merito added three more and M. Bluett converted.

Wairaka 11, P.W.D. .0

No more scores were forthcoming in the first half but Bluett scored early in the second portion. R. Crapp converted.

Wairaka 16, P.W.D. 0.

T. Crapp scored again and his try. was converted.

When a tackle appeared likely R. Crapp, who was in possession, passed to Keepa who forced. The kick missed. Wairaka 24, P.W.D. 0. Taihakoa, the P.W.D. captain, scor-; ed his side’s only five points. He gave an excellent exhibition of dodging and put in a very long run in possession. He converted his try to hearty applause from the sideline. Wairaka 24, P.W.D. 5. Both teams staged a good fight but no more scoring was done and the final score was: Wairaka P.W.D. -5. Mr Breward was referee.
