RUN THEIR OWN SCHOOL
BOYS AND GIRLS IN SCOTLAND SYSTEM A COMPLETE SUCCESS At Crook of Devon, near Kinross, Scotland, the 65 pupils of Naemoor School have complete control over their own affairs and their teachers have no disciplinary power over them. They run the school through a management committee of four boys and girls of their own choosing, and the system, says the head-mistress, is a complete success. If a pupil does not want to work he can leave the classroom until he (or she) decides to “pull his weight” —and the longest a pupil has ever stayed away is three days. The pupils run a school bank and draw on it by cheques, and to encourage thrift they are limited to an expenditure of 2s a week. It is an offence to exceed that sum. The school management committee functions under the chairmanship of 16-year-old Robert Leslie, of Inverness.
